Visitors need a gorilla trekking permit, in order to see the mountain gorillas in the wild. It is a requirement to hold valid gorilla permit, before your journey. A gorilla permit is a permission that is given to all those interested in trekking gorillas in Uganda. The gorilla permits for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are sold and issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
Having a gorilla permit gives you permission to view the endangered mountain gorillas for one hour per person in the jungles of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This gives a room to travelers who are interested in trekking mountain gorillas, Mgahinga National Park offers you an opportunity to see gorillas. The gorilla permit includes park entry fees for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where you don’t have to pay extra cost to enter the park for gorilla tracking. However, for any anther activities other than gorilla tracking, you will need to pay for park entrance fees.

Number of permits available at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has got only one habituated gorilla family known as the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, that is composed of 9 members. Because of this single family therefore, there are only 8 permits available each day.
This means that those interested in tracking gorillas in Mgahinga should book their permits in advance to reduce on chances of missing out. It is advisable to book at least three months in advance.

The biggest opportunity for tourists who dare to enjoy tracking gorillas during the rainy season is that prices of gorilla permits are always discounted. Foreign non-residents being charged $450 instead of the $600, foreign residents charged $500 and East African Citizens charged UGX 250,000 per person, only. The wet season is also the best time for bird watching, because it is during the rainy season that the migratory bird species like the Brown-chested Lapwings can be sighted within Mgahinga National park.
