Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is in the Virunga Mountains and in the Albertine Rift montane forests eco region which totaling about 33.7 square kilometers, it is the smallest of Uganda’s national parks with about 15 kilometers by road, south of the town of Kisoro and approximately 55 kilometers by road, west of Kabale.
Mgahinga National Park which are covered with a series of distinct altitudinal bands of vegetation on slopes with its lowest zone of an area as grass and bush which was formerly encroached and cleared by farmers which now regenerating. Fresh vegetation starts with montane woodland, bamboo zone, montane forest and the ericaceous zone which contains gigantic tree heathers.

The park has at least 39 species of mammal and 79 birds with its biggest number of mammals include elephant, leopard, buffalo and bush pig but these are rarely seen. Mgahinga most famous resident is the mountain gorilla that lives within the forest. Less famous but equally rare and deserving of protection is the golden monkey which is found only in the Virunga and in one other forest in Rwanda. Notable bird species include the Rwenzori Turaco, crowned hornbill, black kite and crowned crane and Golden Monkeys,

Delightful people who are passionate about the Wildlife and also about helping the communities there is only one group that is tracked which is the Nyakagezi gorilla group, years before this group of Gorillas could move from country to country until it has to make Mgahinga its home, now also permits for tracking gorillas in this park are now available in Uganda and you are advised to book in advance.
